Buena Vista!

This service year, two incredible AmeriCorps VISTA members joined our team. Yalinel Beltre, born and raised in Washington Heights, New York City, has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Intergroup Relations from Skidmore College, located in Saratoga Springs, NY. After graduation in 2021, she moved to Logrono, Spain as an English Teaching Assistant to middle and high school students. Upon her return to New York City, she worked as a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Associate at the media and advertising company MediaOcean, before joining the YouthBuild NYC Collaborative in her current Vista role. Nine months into that year of service, Yalinel is deeply immersed in the capacity-building, training, and promotional work of the Collaborative.

This coming fall 2023, Yalinel’s goals are to attend Columbia University- Teachers College for a Master’s in Education Policy, and hopes to continue her role at YouthBuild for a second service year. Yalinel Beltre is of Dominican descent and currently resides in Washington Heights with her parents and younger brother.

Liana Valcin, was born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Haitian parents. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Southern Florida, and is pursuing a masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Liberty University. She is also a member of the US Navy Reserves. In the summer of 2022, Liana moved to New York City to join the YouthBuild NYC Collaborative team. During her time as a VISTA, she helped launch the YouthBuild NYC Collaborative website and Job Ready Portal. But this spring, when the Navy came calling repeatedly for her and had her training new recruits, Liana resigned from her YouthBuild role to continue her work in the U.S. Navy and finish off graduate school. We held a beautiful sendoff to express our gratitude for her cheery disposition, wisdom, can-do attitude, and productive work ethic.

Two excellent Vista collaborators. We wish them all the best in their current and future endeavors!
